The Planning Begins

And the 60th birthday trip was gradually birthed through the Fall of 2010. My dear friend, Karen, and I would do about 10 days as a girl trip and then our husbands - aka "the boys" (the Mikes)- would join us. There were family birthdays, golf tournaments, William and Kate's wedding - all the events of life to consider. After much dithering and wondering and postulating, Karen and I decided on a time frame for our trip: leaving May 9, 2011.

From there, the planning began in earnest. It became really clear that details would best be arranged if we spent time in the same place - planning from Lawrence, Kansas to Amarillo, Texas was NOT working well at all. So Heather, that would be me, planned a trip to Amarillo in January to plan the BIG trip.

Doing all this on our own, we discovered, was a huge pile of work. Coordinating 4 flights for people leaving from different places, arriving at different times and returning to the USA on different days for a reasonable air fare proved to be a daunting task for two NON travel agents. WHEW! At the end of an entire day, and nearly developing a case of computer screen vision and cramped fingers, we had managed the task. Somewhere around 4:00 pm. Karen's Mike announced that Happy hour was a requirement - we AGREED! I believe we accomplished more in one day, however, the Congress does in a month - or maybe a year. Pizza and beer at 575 - a refreshing and relaxing end to the day's task.

And next a look at accommodations.
